Voters don’t want a member of Congress who acts as a rubber stamp for the Trump agenda, which could be bad news for embattled Congresswoman Mimi Walters (R-Irvine), who almost never misses an opportunity to side with Trump.
“By a whopping 25-point margin, voters say they’re more likely to back a congressional candidate who promises to serve as a check on President Donald Trump,” according to a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal.
In the same poll, more than half of voters said they would be less likely to vote for someone who has supported the Trump agenda over 90 percent of the time. Walters supports the Trump agenda 99 percent of the time.
These numbers get more striking when you look at how they break down in all of the House districts that the Cook Political Report designates as competitive. According to the good folks at NBC, who sent over these numbers, in those districts:
- By 52-19, voters in competitive House districts are more likely to support a congressional candidate who promises to be a check on Trump.
- By 55-28, voters in competitive House districts are more likely to support a congressional candidate who has opposed Trump most of the time.
In opposition to the will of voters, Walters is one of the most reliable Trump supporters in Congress. Even on issues that hurt her own constituents, like health care and taxes, Walters chooses to side with Trump.
Health care is the top issue heading into the midterm elections, according to the NBC/WSJ poll, along with several other polls.
Walters voted to eliminate the Affordable Care Act, a piece of legislation that has helped millions of people gain access health insurance. Her preferred alternative was a Republican bill that would have caused more than 20 million people to lose health insurance, according to non-partisan researchers. In addition, the bill she voted for would have eliminated protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions, instituted an “age tax” for people aged 50-64, and caused premiums to skyrocket.
Walters also championed the unpopular Republican tax bill even though it will raise taxes by $12 billion on a million Californians. Homeowners in Orange County can thank Walters when they are forced to pay an additional $4,500 in taxes this year. An L.A. Times poll found the tax bill deeply unpopular with Californians, yet Walters continues to brag about her vote on it. A big business lobbying group is even running television ads touting her vote that helps wealthy corporations rake in billions of dollars while leaving California workers behind.
Walters is not shy about her devotion to Trump and Trump’s agenda. “It is very important that Republicans back the president,” she said. “He’s the president of our party. He stands for what we stand for.“
While she continues to back Trump with an almost perfect pro-Trump voting record, Americans are voicing their concerns.
“Voters know [Trump is] corrupt and authoritarian — those things are two sides of the same coin. They know he lies nonstop and is a racist and has a dangerously destructive temperament,” says the Washington Post.
“They want a check on Trump’s corruption, policies, and temperament — his racist and authoritarian tendencies included,” the Post continues.
While voters want someone who will stand up to Trump, Walters spends all her days staunchly standing with Trump.
